Across Western N.Y. there are places like Monroe county and Eire County that have major cities like Rochester and Buffalo
as well as some primarily rural areas. All of which have animal problems that need to be solved. The landscape in Western New York is varied and we will travel to cover almost all of it. There are many different problem animals found in a wide variety of locations. Some of the more common places we find pest and nuisance animals are listed below:
Common Nuisance Animal Areas
Farm & Agriculture Pest Areas
Beef & Pork Farm
These farms have vast expanses of land that is largely left alone and usually have a steady water supply making them safe havens for just about any and every animal in Western NY. There are also food sources and building that may become homes for pest animals.
Crop Fields
These are easy food sources for all kinds of animals they can be damaged or destroyed and often times there is a huge monetary impact to the farmer in the form of a loss. Not only will they lose crops but they may depend on those crops for live stock feed which may damage or hurt that operation as well.
Dairy Farm
Although they may suffer from many different kinds of problem animals, these farms offer both protected nesting areas as well as consistent and easy food source. They are especially prone to Problem pigeon and nuisance starling infestations. These pests can contaminate the food sources as well as reduce animal production by reducing the quality of their feed.
Equestrian Centers
The damage that can be causes by pest animals is varied from rodents and other smaller pests eating horse feed and contaminating both food and water with their droppings to burrowing animals which can degrade the landscape causing injuries to buildings animals or people. Because of this in conjunction with the cost of maintaining these facilities its imperative to remove pest animals quickly.
Grain Silos & Bins
Since they are used to store large quantities of grains they attract all kinds of pest and nuisance animals both that feed on the grain and that feed on the smaller animals that eat the grain. Aside from loss of commodities from problem animals they can become contaminated by animal droppings as well as carcass left from the predator animals eating the smaller pests eating the grain.
Orchards
Drive around the state of New York and you’ll see lots of orchards growing apples, pears, peaches and more. Humans aren’t the only ones who enjoy these fruits animals also like them and an damage or destroy crops as well the land they are grown on. This animal damage can be very costly to any farmer with an orchard.
Poultry Farms
Chickens and their eggs are often the target of predation, this can damage or destroy useful populations on farms and in neighborhoods alike. Their food is also often sought after by other animals and birds which not only leave the chickens to find food else where but these pest animals can spread disease and inhabit or damage neighboring building
Vineyards
Vineyards are faced with many different problem animals that will wander into grapevines. Some of the nuisance wildlife species that negatively impact vineyards are deer, rodents, birds and raccoons. While these all create problems that damage or destroy plants, pest birds, in particular, are notorious for pecking through fruit and damaging it so that it cannot be used for winemaking.
Commercial Nuisance Animal Areas
Golf Courses / Driving Ranges
Anyone who has been on a golf course can tell you they are a haven for wildlife, especially in more developed areas. Deer, geese, woodchucks and gulls are often detrimental to the golf course maintenance and prohibitive to attaining peaks conditions. This will cause many golf course superintendents to request nuisance wildlife control.
Storage Facility
The relative “calm and quiet” around storage facilities makes them great places for problem animals, rodents, gulls and geese are just some of the issues that plague storage facilities not only causing dirty appearance but damaging buildings and require professional wildlife control
Manufacturing Facilities
These buildings are often very large and have high ceilings which are rarely accessed by people making them a great hiding place for certain animals and birds alike. These animals may not only damage the building and expensive machinery but they can often contaminate the manufacturing process and hurt a business bottom line.
Camp Grounds
The abundance of people often result in food being easily targeted by nuisance animals. From the biggest bear down to the smallest mouse, campsites have them all. These facilities also often have water which attracts unwanted geese or gulls which leave feces on the ground making the facility a health and safety hazard.
Airfield/Airport
It doesn’t take a lot to cause damage to an aircraft and geese, gulls and herd animals can all do this. Because of the relative absence of people at an airport most animals see no threats and will have rapid population growth. If the problem animals aren’t removes fast there can be costly flight delays, aircraft damage or even air craft crashed resulting in injury and death.
Amusement Parks
These parks offer large amounts of food in the form of trash as well as lots of buildings in which nuisance wildlife can live. They can damage and destroy rides or attractions which can lead to costly repairs or even customer injury and in rare cases death.
Landfills/Dumps
Landfills provide food for birds and ground animals alike, they are attracted from miles away by the odor. Gulls and rodents are particularly prevalent on landfills but bears and other animals such as raccoons, opossum and even predators feeding on other animals eating garbage are often in high numbers.
Cemetery
Since they are relatively quiet but well maintained they attract a wide variety of problem animals. Geese love the cut, however their noise and droppings are often disruptive. burrowing animals such as woodchucks are especially concerning in cemeteries as they can not only create holes that damage equipment and cause injury hazards but they can cause monuments and headstones to tip or fall.
Marinas
These areas have lots of “hiding” places where pest animals can cause problems, a rodent or squirrel can chew through the electrical wiring on a boat or hoist and do sever damage. Geese pollute the water and quickly take over and if there are is any dumpster or fish cleaning station it will quickly attract just about any scavenging nuisance animal.
Warehouses
Often vast and expansive, whorehouses are hard to protect from unwanted animal entry and often its best to eliminate the pest animals. The items inside and the building its self can become to birds as well as other animals creating a mess or damaging the area. If there are any nesting or food materials present they will also attract rodents.
Office Buildings
People in office building often think they are isolated form pest animals but because of this they are less likely to take the necessary precautions needed to keep they away resulting in the need for quick problem animal removal.
Malls/Shopping Center
Rail Yards
Residential Pest Problem Areas
Beaches
Just about every beach in New York has a problem with nuisance gulls and if there is cut grass geese are also a problem. The food and other waste people bring in also attracts many other unwanted pest animals. If the beach is public you may not need a federal permit for certain animals.
Condo, Hotel & Apartment Complexes
Any time you get a lot of people in an area they will have to compete with intruding wildlife, weather there are birds and rodents in dumpsters or other animals entering buildings to make a home its a real problem. Often times its also expensive landscaping that is damaged by wildlife giving residents headaches.

They will damage and destroy the landscape as well as leave leave debris and dropping making the space unusable.
Parks
Often quiet and expansive these areas of outdoor recreation are often used to enjoy wildlife, however certain animals create problems, bird droppings from gulls or geese, plant damage from feeding deer and squirrels and even damage to the landscape from woodchucks or muskrats and bevers if there is water present.
Residential Out Buildings
Most of the time people pay less attention to out building on their property be it a barn, garage or shed. Because they tend to get less traffic than the primary residence they are a choice location for pest animals to make their home in , on or under. These buildings also often hold items that are viewed as a food source by pest animals. The nesting, feeding and general living within these buildings leads to damage and costly repairs.
Vacant / Abandoned Houses
While most people don’t care about a vacant or abandoned home its important to remember that the structure may have value that can be destroyed bu animals getting inside. Also neighboring properties which do not want these nuisance animals around may find that as their numbers increase in the neighboring property they are at risk of having animal problems.
