Almost every farmer who owns land in NY applies for and gets deer nuisance permits. This is because there are an abundance of deer and they cause lots of damage. NYS realized we need to control deer damage. Of all the farmers I’ve talked to almost all make the same mistake, they give them to hunters. These hunters go out during the regular hunting season and fill these permits and the farmer thinks “Awesome, 
I’ve filled all my nuisance permits!” but the sad reality is they didn’t really get a head because here is what happens.
Hunter A gets his NYS tags with a hunting license and most likely has permission to hunt on a few properties and since he likes hunting he wants to hunt as much as he can, to accomplish this he hunts on the farmers property and fills nuisance permits only then he takes his tags and goes and hunts else where. The farmer effectively limited the harvest on his property to only nuisance permits and never saw the true potential of the amount of deer that could have been killed on his property. The damage the deer do is about the same (or gets worse) every year because the deer population is replaced or grows.
Here is what farmers should do; tell whoever wants to hunt they are more than welcome to hunt on their property (or limit it as you see fit) but MAKE THEM USE THEIR OWN TAGS. Yes, it seems counter productive but stick with me here, when you make them use their own tags you will see they generally kill the same number of deer but now at the end of the season you have a stack of nuisance deer permits in your hand. We have found that we can come in and in a couple nights using our highly specialized equipment can fill the remaining nuisance permits.
Now you have almost doubled the number of nuisance deer removed off your property which means they reproduction rate cannot replace the population and you see a noticeable reduction in white tailed deer damage starting in year one! After 3-4 seasons the reduction in the deer population is even greater and usually at a manageable level.
Regardless of weather or not you hire professional deer removal experts or you simply have someone fill the permits out of season, its an important change that you can make to the nuisance deer control program on your property that will have an immediate impact.
